Facilitated by Studio Zao and in cooperation with the TDA, Torbay Council and Levelling Up UK. We have more than 30 participants from local businesses and trade groups. Here's the results from that first meeting:
With nearly 30 attendees, and with Red Paddle Co bringing along a real Inflation Station, the vision of accessible paddleboarding services is becoming more real! We talked about the timetable and funding resources for elite paddleboarding events, the costs and practical operation of the Inflation Stations, and how we will assemble the pins on the SUP Map of Torbay (aka Piste Map).
Standing Room Only! We had a packed agenda and guest speakers Brendon Prince with a PaddleUK update, Carolyn Custerson with funding news, Jan Tribble presenting a preview of the Digital SUP Piste Map for 2024 and so much more. Download the update below.
We met at The Redcliffe in Paignton to really get to the heart of each of these sectors. What do we need to be successful? What are our messages to the UK's Paddleboarding Community? What measures can be taken to make paddleboarding safe and accessible for all, while preserving the natural environment and iconic beauty of our bay?
This is a community-led group, focussed on the economic development of the visitor economy all year round. Our purpose is to listen to the voices of our sector, and promote these messages to increase the paddleboarding tourist economy.

On 18 June, representatives from varied sectors like Accommodation, Food and Drink, Safety, Accessibility, and Sustainability met at the Redcliffe Hotel to further the SUP Hub initiative. The meeting commenced with status updates from working groups. The Food and Drink group highlighted new initiatives such as inflation stations and Apres' SUP events, along with planned engagements on social media to promote paddleboarding. Special events like Paddle and pizza at Meadfoot Beach Cafe and weekend paddleboarding events at Anstey's Cove were also discussed.
The Accommodation group announced the development of a ranking system and a survey to better understand provider needs, with a proposal for digital badges on their websites. Sustainability updates included making the SUP Piste Map dynamic, adding monthly updates, and improving map layers for better inclusion of various businesses.
Safety updates focussed on emergency contact protocols, the inclusion of hourly weather forecasts from the NCI website, and introductory racing events hosted by SOAK.
During the workshop, participants brainstormed ideas to engage wellness, retail, transport, culture, and events sectors, with plans to invite these sectors to subsequent meetings.
Announcements included the Torbay Council's economic development team expressing interest in future sessions, and a PR initiative proposed by John Hibbard and Jason Parry to attract national and international media attention to Torbay.
Concluding the meeting, John Hibbard praised the community's dedication, offering connections with paddleboarding publications and influencers. Upcoming events include a discussion led by Lyn at the Paignton Chamber of Commerce and further plans for meetings and member engagement. The collective enthusiasm and commitment were acknowledged with thanks to all participants.

DownloadWith a motivated and engaged business community, featuring global leaders in the SUP community, all set against the natural geology of the Bay, Torbay is poised to be recognised as the undisputed Home of Standup Paddleboarding.
This March, we engaged local business leaders along the coast in a "hackathon" setting to develop our positioning and our compelling reasons why this initiative makes sense for Torbay and the English Riviera. The output is astonishing - with over 30 local businesses engaged and devoted to making this happen.
We now have a working group set up to bring this vision to life.
The outputs from the hackathon follow distinct themes, all created independently in groups, yet all drawing the same conclusions:
Many more ideas were generated during the hackathon; creative, accessible and "do-able" for every single coastal business.
Now with over 70 businesses and individuals signed up to make a difference, we'd love you to join the conversation.
